Alex Barrett’s practice is focused primarily on complex state and federal court litigation and arbitration of matters involving contracts and commercial disputes, including workouts and collections for lenders, real estate, antitrust and cases involving corporate governance and the fiduciary and other duties of directors and officers. He also counsels management on employment-related matters, defends businesses in alleged discrimination, wage and hour and other employment cases and handles internal and governmental investigations and proceedings, including those arising under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Mr. Barrett’s recent significant engagements include the restructuring and collateralization of multi-million dollar credit facilities for a bank, successful litigation of fraud, fiduciary duty and other claims before the North Carolina Business Court, serving as Receiver for a chapter of a national car club, defense of a large not-for-profit in an alleged employment discrimination matter, resolution of a case before the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and litigation and a multi-million dollar recovery for a bankruptcy trustee against a corporate fiduciary. He also served as lead North Carolina trial and appellate counsel in defense of the University of Maryland in the case brought by the Atlantic Coast Conference over the University’s withdrawal from the ACC.
Mr. Barrett’s extensive community involvement includes serving on the board of the local M.S. Society chapter. He also previously served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Children’s Home, Inc. and as Board Member and Chairman of Carolina Bank.
