Virginia State Bar Recognizes Joe Condo for Diversity Advocacy with Clarence M. Dunnaville, Jr. Achievement Award
Tysons Corner, VA | June 21, 2017 The Virginia State Bar Diversity Conference Board of Governors Family has named Joseph A. Condo the 2017 recipient of the Clarence M. Dunnaville, Jr. Achievement Award. The honor follows Mr. Condo’s receipt of the State Bar’s Betty A. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year.
Mr. Condo is a principal attorney with Offit Kurman’s Family Law Practice Group. Throughout his 40-year career serving families in Virginia, he has acted as a staunch advocate for racial equity in the legal profession. During his tenure as Virginia State Bar President, he established the Millennium Initiative, which set the groundwork for the State Bar’s efforts to cultivate a culture of diversity in the ensuing years.
The Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. Achievement Award honors members of the Virginia State Bar who demonstrate leadership in “fostering, encouraging, and facilitating diversity and inclusion in the bar, the judiciary, and the legal profession.” The award is named for famed civil rights legal activist Clarence M. Dunnaville, Jr. Recipients are chosen based on the following criteria:
- Significant, demonstrable, and outstanding contribution to fostering, encouraging, or facilitating diversity and inclusion in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
- Demonstrated dedication to raising issues of diversity and protecting civil and human rights in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and/or
- Participation in corporate and/or community events that promote mutual respect, acceptance, cooperation or tolerance in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In unanimously nominating and confirming Mr. Condo for the award, the Board recognized the family law attorney for his contributions to diversity advocacy, as well as the example he sets for his peers. Mr. Condo’s anonymous nominator remarked:
“As president of the Virginia State Bar in 2000-01, Joe prioritized diversity and created the Millennium Diversity Initiative (MDI), which in turn created an impetus and funding for the Oliver Hill/Samuel Tucker Summer Law Institute and other diversity-focused projects, including the Diversity Conference itself before it finally gained bar funding in 2016. For over 20 years, he has been at the forefront of promoting diversity and inclusion on both the state and local level, paving the way for so many to carry on that noble goal. He continues to be a vibrant force for inclusion and is a leader and mentor for an entire generation within Virginia’s legal profession.”
Mr. Condo received news of the award the day after accepting his Virginia State Bar Lifetime Achievement Award on April 20th. That honor also commended Mr. Condo for his contributions as an attorney and role model, including “his command of the law, his rapport with colleagues, [and] his ability to teach by example.” For more information about Mr. Condo’s Lifetime Achievement Award, click here.
The Virginia State Bar presented Joe Condo with the Clarence M. Dunnavile Jr. Achievement Award on Friday, June 16, 2017, on 11:45 am at the 79th VSB Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach, VA. For more Virginia State Bar news and events, visit www.vsb.org.
