Sontiq, an enterprise high-tech security and identity protection company, today announced that its Corporate Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer, John Burcham, has received the prestigious Drinker Biddle Top General Counsel in the 2019 First Chair Awards. The First Chair awards recognize in-house counsel who have made significant contributions to the legal community, based on their accomplishments during the past year in a variety of categories. First Chair honorees are selected by a committee of attorneys from top law firms who have been recognized as leaders in their area of practice.

“John is not only extremely knowledgeable on numerous aspects of law, from intellectual property to regulatory and contract, but he is also extraordinarily personable and approachable,” said Jonathan Wachs, Principal at Offit Kurman, member of the First Chair Award nomination committee, and one of Burcham’s nominators. “I have enjoyed working with John for many years, and find him to be exceptional and talented, with an eagerness to jump in and execute flawlessly.”

First Chair nomination criteria include: demonstration of excellent leadership in the community at large and within the attorney’s company, consistent record of high achievement throughout his or her career, and a display of commitment to the highest ethical standards and professional excellence. All nominees must be in-house counsel recommended by at least three attorneys in good standing within the private practice community.

“It’s an honor to be recognized alongside so many respected attorneys. I appreciate the organization’s dedication to continuing legal education, and connecting private and corporate attorneys,” said Burcham of his fellow First Chair recipients. “It’s also empowering to engage with my fellow attorneys focused on aspects of data protection and privacy, areas that are front and center to my role at Sontiq.”

Burcham joined Sontiq in 2013, under the EZShield brand. He is a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional through the SCCE and has broad experience in an extensive variety of compliance and regulatory areas, including the FTC Act, UDAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley, GLB, Dodd-Frank, PCI Compliance, FCRA, and state-level regimes. John has experience as in-house counsel for both private and public companies, providing him with a strong foundation in understanding the needs of business owners of all sizes, as well as the individual consumers who ultimately use and benefit from Sontiq’s intelligent identity security solutions.
