Pilar Nichols Named to Daily Record Leading Women for 2019

Bethesda, MD | October 14, 2019

The Maryland Daily Record has named Offit Kurman Family Law attorney Pilar C. Nichols among its 2019 Leading Women winners.

Launched in 2010, The Daily Record’s Leading Women awards honor 50 women aged 40 or younger for the career accomplishments they’ve made so far in terms of “professional experience, community involvement, and commitment to inspiring change.” The list of winners is published annually in print and online. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the awards.

Leading Women honorees are selected by a panel of previous winners as well as winners of the Daily Record’s Top 100 Women awards. To be eligible for inclusion, nominees must complete an application outlining their education and career history, providing examples of mentoring and leadership roles served, volunteer involvement, awards and honors earned, professional accomplishments, and other details that demonstrate a commitment to inspiring change in the nominee’s organization or community.

In addition to winning a spot among the Daily Record’s Leading Women, Ms. Nichols was also named to the 2020 list of The Best Lawyers in America, which will appear as a supplement to an upcoming issue of the publication.

At Offit Kurman, Ms. Nichols serves as a Principal attorney in the firm’s Family Law Practice Group. She has extensive trial experience and practice in various areas of Family Law. Her concentration focuses on the litigation and settlement of divorce, child custody and visitation, mediation, spousal and child support, property division (including complex property issues and those that require business valuations), negotiating and drafting of separation agreements, guardianship proceedings, and adoptions.

Her niche is in the area of domestic violence where she has extensive experience in representing clients in—and presenting on—domestic violence protective orders and any accompanying criminal charges. Ms. Nichols has experience in divorces involving the spouses of international organizations, such as the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. She is regularly court-appointed to represent children in contested custody cases as child counsel. Ms. Nichols is also a trained mediator, having completed the general mediation training and both the property division and custody training. In addition to her family law practice, Ms. Nichols, a former criminal prosecutor, practices criminal and traffic defense, including appeals at all stages of post-conviction.

Aside from her work with clients, Ms. Nichols has held numerous leadership positions in Maryland legal associations. She is a member of the Bar Association of Montgomery County, previously serving on the bar's executive committee, as a co-chair of the Family Law Section and is currently a member of the Judicial Selections Committee. She has been a Barrister on the Montgomery County Inns of Court since 2011. She is a former MSBA Leadership Academy Fellow and currently serves on the Leadership Academy Committee. Ms. Nichols is also a member and past president of the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association and continues to serve on the association's Judicial Nominations Committee.

In recognition of her leadership and service in the legal community, Ms. Nichols has received honors such as the “Outstanding Leadership” award by the MSBA Young Lawyers Section and the University of Maryland, Francis King School of Law for “outstanding leadership” and “continued commitment to diversity.” Additionally, she was recently named to the 2019 “Top 50 Women Maryland Super Lawyers” and "Top 100 Maryland Super Lawyers” lists.

The Daily Record’s 2019 Leading Women winners will be honored at an awards reception and dinner on December 2 at 5:30pm at the Westin Annapolis. Winners will also be profiled in a special magazine inserted in the publication’s December 3 issue.
