Frederick, MD | November 20  Visitors to the Salvation Army offices in Frederick on Tuesday were treated to the full spread of Thanksgiving favorites.

Plates of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce and rolls found their way to hundreds of people during the annual meal that dates back more than 25 years.

Lt. Carla Raymer of the Salvation Army said the meal creates a family-like atmosphere for many of the guests.

“Some people have been coming every year, and this is their Thanksgiving,” she said.

Members of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary served the steaming plates. Volunteers from the Frederick Bar Association fixed the plates with food the group donated.

April Inskeep, who was spooning gravy, said that everyone from the Bar Association sees volunteering around Thanksgiving as an important way to help in Frederick.

“The opportunity to give back and help the community is a good answer for everybody,” the first-year volunteer said.

Ian Bartman, who has volunteered through the Bar Association for nearly 10 years, said the service was not just a chance to get out of the office. “It’s nice to come out every year and interact with the people,” Bartman said.

Sally McMurry, president of the women’s auxiliary, said volunteers were cooking from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday to prepare the 17 whole turkeys and 25 turkey breasts.

Said Dave Severn,  "It was my first year participating, and I just wanted to offer a small personal service to the Salvation Army and those in our community in need especially during the holidays”

Not including the volunteers to prepare the food, the six-hour meal requires about 50 volunteers, McMurry said.
