Meghan Finnerty to Speak on Insurance Issues for the Sharing Economy at ABA Property Insurance Law Committee 2019 Spring Conference

Offit Kurman principal Meghan Finnerty has been selected as a featured speaker at the American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section’s Property Insurance Law Committee 2019 Spring Conference.
The Property Insurance Law Committee is one of the foremost organizations for property insurance lawyers and insurance professionals around the United States. The committee provides education, networking, and career development opportunities for members and event attendees. Each year, the committee holds a conference featuring speakers who offer guidance and updates on important legal and practical issues facing the insurance industry.
The topic for the 2019 Spring Conference is “Evolution: Property Insurance Law from Cargo to Crypto.” The conference will be held Wednesday, May 8th through Friday, May 10th at the JW Marriott in Austin, Texas. According to the committee, the event “will focus on how utilizing, adapting and responding to emerging technology and economic developments,” touching on topics such as increasingly intangible losses, use of drones in the adjusting process, blockchain, cryptocurrency, the growth of the sharing economy, and more.
On Thursday, May 9th at 3:15pm, Ms. Finnerty will co-present , the conference’s featured presentation alongside Laura F. Farrant of Mound Cotton Wollan & Greengrass LLP. Ms. Finnerty’s presentation, titled “Property Insurance and the Sharing Economy,” will explore how peer-to-peer economic models popularized by companies such as Uber, HomeAway, and Airbnb present new opportunities and challenges for policyholders and property insurers. The panel will analyze new risks and issues raised by the sharing economy, including its impact on the insurable-interest requirement, business income losses, and potential gaps in coverage that arise from the use of insured property for both personal and commercial purposes.
At Offit Kurman, Ms. Finnerty is a principal commercial litigator with an emphasis on insurance coverage and appellate litigation. She has represented companies in fields such as energy, finance, construction, manufacturing and retail in commercial litigation disputes, and regularly serves as a sounding board for manufacturing clients on a wide variety of legal issues including insurance losses, risk management, contractual indemnity, employee theft, and collection issues. Additionally, Ms. Finnerty analyzes available insurance coverage for her clients under environmental, boiler and machinery, professional, D&O, EPLI, and commercial general liability policies when a company suffers a loss or is named as a defendant in litigation.
In addition to her trial work, Ms. Finnerty is well-versed in appellate practice, and has argued zoning and insurance coverage cases before all of Pennsylvania’s appellate courts.
