The Importance of Self-Care During the Divorce Process

close up of a person sitting on a couch talking to another person holding a clipboardNow is the time to prioritize your mental health.

According to Bustle.com, famous singer and performer Adele recently told an audience that during her divorce, she was seeing her therapist multiple times per day to help her deal with her turbulent emotions. While this may be more treatment than most of us can fit into our day or budget, Adele needs to be applauded for sharing her story and normalizing the concept of seeking mental health care as often as she needed. The importance of mental health and wellness during divorce cannot be overstated.

Staying positive during a divorce can be challenging.

Divorce is almost always a challenging and painful time of life for my clients, whether male or female, people of modest means or people of great wealth. The emotions that my clients describe are often fear, betrayal, loss, or a combination of some or all of these. This makes sense, as divorce is always included in the list of the most difficult things to go through in life, along with the death of loved ones, moving and personal health issues. During the process of divorcing, it can be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Look to the future and seek out positive people and pastimes.

As a divorce attorney, I can assure you that the light is there. I understand the importance of including empathy for my clients in my role as an attorney, even while guiding them through the legal process of complaints, motions, and mediations. I do my best to encourage my clients to look toward the future ahead instead of turning back to the past. I also encourage clients to spend time with friends and family, to allow themselves time to heal and to incorporate meditation or yoga if they enjoy it. Many clients find including a therapist in their divorce “team” provides a safe place for discussion and stress relief, whether their concern is for financial well-being after the divorce or how they will adjust to sharing parenting time with children. If your concerns about such issues are holding you back from moving forward towards divorce or participating in a divorce filed against you, speak to an experienced family law attorney and a therapist as well.
