Some states recognized same-sex marriages much earlier than others, while others did not want to do so at all. Of course, the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges made same-sex marriages legal nationwide in 2015. However, couples who were married in states that did not recognize same-sex marriages prior to Obergefell could face unexpected problems when trying to separate or divorce.
