Legalese Explained: Redress

Hopefully you had a fantastic Independence Day. In all the fireworks and grilled hot dogs, I find that the ‘reason behind the season’ is sometimes forgotten. The Declaration of Independence states that one of the reasons for the declaration is: “The petitions for redress of these injuries, and the refusal to redress them; the recital of an appeal to the people of Great Britain, and of their being deaf to the voice of justice and consanguinity.” The word I’m focusing on here is redress.

The act of receiving satisfaction for an injury sustained.

It is a pretty simple word, and the concept in and of itself is also pretty simple. This idea of receiving satisfaction for a wrong levied against you is at the heart of the American system of justice. Just something to think about.
