There seems to be a new term being applied to career changes for those of a certain age.  That term is “Encore.” My friend, Mary Thompson, has experienced her own career change, and in doing so, founded Encore Howard County.

What is the mission:  To re-envision ideas and attitudes about retirement and aging in Howard County via an integrated array of resources for transitioning encore adults as they explore options to remain engaged and contributing members of our community.  As a community based network, it provides a grassroots platform to inspire and support individuals and organizations as they build or engage in encore services, programs, and other opportunities within their own organizations, communities, and circles of influence.

Who are the players?  The founders are Mary Thompson, CFP, Elizabeth Mahler EdD, and Patricia Sasse.  These ladies, in their encore careers, launched at Belmont Manor on April 25 to a large crowd of interested participants.  They talked about their own paths to Encore, their mission, and their enthusiasm for integrating this concept with partners like the Departments of Aging and Parks and Recreation.

It is interesting to think about the fact that at a certain age, we want to do something different.  Sometimes that’s by choice, and sometimes not.  But in either case, we get to make a decision about next steps.  It seems that the goal of Encore is to harness the resources we have in Howard County to make these decisions and transitions more seamless.

They describe Encore as a “work in progress” which means to me that it is evolving and will continue to evolve.  I suspect that for each individual Encore will mean something different.  Congratulations to my friend Mary, and her co-founders for a fabulous kick off!
