Saturday Side Hustle: The Holidays

Because the holidays are here, I’m not going to start discussing food quality and safety for another two weeks and I thought it would be a fun idea to write about Holiday Side Hustles. Here are my favorites are!

1. Sell Christmas Trees

I read an article about Christmas Tree Brooklyn, a company two brothers started when they realized they could deliver Christmas trees to their customers’ doorsteps in New York less expensively than that of their competition, with very little overhead. You have to go to the website and see them in their army jeep with the dog. I love it!

2. Help People Out

My wife challenged me this year: “Can you at least go get two presents each for the kids?”

Let me just start off my saying that my wife is an absolute superstar during the holidays; she’s awesome…meanwhile, I ‘m useless. So far, I’ve picked up some presents for her, and one for one kid (there are three). I’m going to do it myself…but I wish I knew about services like Task Rabbit, where people will do stuff for you. Maybe I could even have them pick the gifts!

3. Work for a Warehouse or Shipping Operation

The cool thing about this one is that you probably can just roll out of bed and show up to work for a few hours in street clothes, as opposed to facing the public in a department store or gift shop. My brother-in-law and his partner started one of my favorite side hustles, Country Club Prep, years ago, and his office is in a warehouse in Atlanta where I’ll bet he employed extra hands this season to ship out those bowties and madras pants … and they have a basketball hoop!

4. Work for a Liquor Store

People like to get in the spirit around the holidays, and these businesses need extra customer service. For example, Total Wine advertises jobs for seasonal team members on LinkedIn. I’ll bet those places get busy during the holidays, and maybe you can get some discounts!

5. Freelance Writing

Companies try to saturate the cyberspace with interesting content during the holiday season to improve their Internet marketing footprint. If you can write, look for opportunities like that. You can probably do it from home, and if you’re really good, who knows what it could lead to!

6. Drive an Uber, or a Lyft, or Better Yet, a Limo!

Nobody wants to drive back and forth to various holiday parties. Driving takes some of the fun out of it for many of us, and that’s why we need drivers, and they are harder to find during this time of year!

Well, I think you all get the point. Happy Holidays!
