M&A Nugget: Big Data

Big Data is very large and/or complex sets of data that can be analyzed mathematically to reveal patterns, trends and connections.  Although Big Data has been used for several years in business, it can be particularly useful in the M&A field.  Often, a seller’s base level data doesn’t tell the whole story.  Using Big Data allows for a deeper analysis.  For example, Big Data analytics can be used to predict which customers of a target have a higher probability of not continuing to do business with the new company, can identify cross-selling opportunities by identifying the target’s customers that may have a need for the purchaser’s products and can identify operational inefficiencies or failures.  Big Data analytics is real and readily available.  Taking advantage of it will assist a purchaser to predict the likelihood of success and maximize the value of the acquisition.
