Promoting the growth and success of movers, shippers, and logistics personnel around the world

Terry Head is the President of the International Association of Movers, the moving industry’s nonprofit trade association. Located in Washington, DC, IAM has over 2,000 members, representing more than 170 moving, shipping, forwarding, logistics, and cargo auditing companies around the world. The organization provides its members with exclusive education and professional development programs, political advocacy, and global networking opportunities. Since 1962, IAM has hosted an annual meeting and trade show—the largest in the industry.

Can you tell us about your involvement with the South Fairfax County Chamber? What’s IAM’s relationship there?

TERRY HEAD: As a member of the South Fairfax County Chamber, I probably joined more as a concerned citizen and neighbor than a business. IAM is a global organization. We don’t really operate on a local basis here.

We’re located here in Fairfax County and, as a matter of fact, every one of my staff members, including myself, lives in Fairfax County. So I have an interest there, but for me it’s probably more personal. I grew up in the area. I was born right here, in Old Town Alexandria. I went to high school in Mount Vernon High School, knew I was going to live down here in the Mason Neck area when I was in high school, and have lived down here for well over 40 years.

I love the area for what it is and, better yet, what it’s not. I think as a member of the Chamber I can have a hand in bringing on the urbanization of the area without losing the pristine environment that we find ourselves living in, and I think the Chamber has and will continue to play a very key role in that. And, obviously for someone who deals with government, for me personally it’s probably on a national level, I think I can bring my experience and advocacy to the Chamber, particularly as a board member, and I hope the Chamber develops the voice of influence we hope to, with the local and regional governments.
