What Family Law Bills Passed During the 2017 Legislative Session?

The following family law related bills were passed into law during the 2017 Maryland legislative session, and so long as they are not vetoed by the Governor, will take effect October 1, 2017:

Divorce—Restoration of Former Name: A party can request restoration of a former name up to 18 months after the Judgment of Absolute Divorce is granted, without requiring a formal name change process. Presently, the request had to be made and granted at the time of divorce, not after.

Child Support—Health insurance: Revises current child support law to define “health insurance” to include medical, dental, prescription, and vision insurance. Until now, “health insurance” had not been defined. This creates uniformity across the jurisdictions as to what types of insurance are included in child support.

Domestic violence—Orders: Permits Interim, Temporary and Final Protective Orders to be admissible as evidence in other family law matters.

Special thanks to the Maryland State Bar Association Family and Juvenile Law Section for this information.
