Stephanie M. Smith is a principal attorney in Offit Kurman’s Real Estate Law and Transactions practice group. She has over 20 years of experience representing real estate developers, business owners, and lenders with the financing of multi-family housing and mixed-use development projects. Her clients include real estate developers, investors, business owners and financial institutions, providing them with efficient coordination for multi-layered financing real estate and business enterprise ventures in both urban and rural communities nationwide. She also assists clients with the packaging of loan and tax credit applications to successfully obtain real estate and business financing from private and government financial institutions.
Ms. Smith also provides strategic tax advice related to real estate, business, estate planning and investment activities and handles a variety of litigation matters in D.C. and Maryland courts, including landlord/tenant, equitable subrogation and rightful title.
In addition to her current role as counsel to lenders, developers and businesses, Ms. Smith has also served as a mortgage underwriter for a state bond agency and CMBS lending institution and a legal and tax policy advisor to several federal government agencies’ lending divisions. She was a Governing Board Member of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law and the past Chair of the ABA Real Property Section’s Affordable Housing Committee.
Stephanie Smith is a frequent speaker and writer on tax credit financing and opportunity zone investing for a wide-ranging audience that includes commercial real estate agents, developers and real estate trade organizations. She is currently working on a book, “Creative Financing Tools for Real Estate Development Projects,” for publication in winter of 2022.
